Travel: Salvation Mountain

Septemeber 2020

Niland, CA

(Slab City)

If you're an easily intrigued person like myself, you'll enjoy the Salvation Mountain and the fun facts that surround this structure, including Slab City itself.

After finding this place on my explore page on Instagram, I had a chance to visit on my way to Arizona, in 120-degree weather (not recommended.) Other than the mountain and a few more art installations, it's not much to the site. The art is beautiful and it's amazing that one man, Leonard Knight, created this beautiful structure. The stop in total, due to the weather and the essence of the site, was maybe 10 minutes long. I recommend anyone to visit if they are on a road trip or need a good place for a photoshoot - but check the weather before making plans.

Fun Facts:

  • Leanard Knight, originally from Vermont spent 30 years creating the site.

  • The mountain that stands today, is the 2nd mountain as the first one crumbled.

  • Salvation Mountain is located in "Slab City," formerly Fort Dunlap World War II Marine training base.

  • Slab City is a "free" city - a community of squatters where the community makes its own rules and culture.

For more information, you can visit the Salvation Moutain Website or Spaces Website.
